Next New Media

I think the next new media will involve some of the newer technologies that have not yet been integrated into the media scope. Augmented reality has already been incorporated into some new media applications and I think there will be a wave of augmented ingrained apps in the near future. The next new media I would love to see and also expect to see is a real estate app like StreetEasy or Zillow integrating augmented reality. This way, apartment shoppers could walk down the street and look through their phone and see prices and information on any given building or apartments displayed as if they were on the building itself. Also, augmented reality can be used to show what furniture would look like in the apartment by having a virtual piece of furniture displayed in the room through your phone. This would be a fun and interesting way to shop for apartments and have a better idea of what furniture could fit in it.

Privacy

Privacy and confidentiality are two problem areas when it comes to new media. The vast majority of people never read the fine print when approving to the terms and conditions when we download a social media app. As we have come to realize, there are some conditions that allow for your private information to be sold to advertisers so confidentiality is becoming a real issue. Recently, Facebook was in court due to the users information being sold to companies who used for political campaigns and fake news stories. This breach of trust is one example of many of how new media is having issues with privacy and confidentiality. The problem is that we give up most of our privacy when we agree to using these new media apps, so it is up to us to change that.

Creative

New media fosters creativity in many ways. From people using social media to make themselves their own brand to new genres of music being created, new media has given creatives everywhere a platform. In the article,  The New Math of Mashups from The New Yorker Magazine, we see an example of a creative using new media to mix two seemingly unrelated songs into one that is fun to listen to and also very creative. Music has been radically changed with the arrival of new media, in fact there is even a brand new genre that was born from this technology called electric dance music (EDM). EDM has quickly taken over the youth and has created a multi billion dollar business for itself because of people who are creative enough to make music with nothing but their computers. Some of the best EDM artists record real life sounds and mix them in with electronic notes that creates some of the most unique songs anyone could ever imagine. Music is a huge industry that has been impacted heavy by new ...

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are increasingly becoming more attractive to people than our own real world. In fact, virtual reality now has a place in peoples homes for entertainment and in businesses for economic purposes. As a real estate agent in New York City, virtual world technology is something that I have kept a close eye on. Every month, another real estate company is adopting virtual technology to advertise their properties online and save their clients the trouble of having to physically go and see it. Why does this interest me? Because virtual reality technology that is used for this purpose can take jobs away like mine! However, virtual worlds are still in their early stage and in the article,  After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get A Reboot  the author explains, " No one has been creative enough to think beyond what’s already out there. Some businesses got into virtual worlds early on, at the top of the hype cycle, and got disappointed and left. Virtual worlds  still ...

Social Networking Sites

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. These are the social networking sites I consider to be absolute powerhouses in the social media business and the ones I use frequently. Though they all connect people in one way or another, they do so in very different ways. Facebook was a pioneer for social networking and has changed a bit since it first started. It makes it easy to see what your friends and family are doing as the feed seems have they're posts readily available. It's nice because it includes posts, pictures, videos and live streaming so it kind of does everything in one place! It is infamous now for being where our grandparents are, and it is certainly true in my case! My grandparents use Facebook much more than I do, and I only use it to watch videos when I'm bored! Twitter seems to be one of the strongest social media sites, even the president uses it daily! It is very simple and straight forward which makes it attractive and easy to use. It is a place wher...
